R – ROTC in college.

Y – Your Why

1. R – ROTC in College. Get into officer development training now. The best way to improve your resume is to participate in ROTC. You don’t need to win the scholarship to join; just walk-on!

2. E – Enroll in Calc & Chem. Take a full load in college that mimics Academy freshman curriculum, most notably Calculus, plus Chemistry (or Physics). If you have to choose between those three, choose the ones that you performed the poorest in during high school. Then ask for recommendations from those college professors.

3. A – Attempt SAT/ACT again. If you can get your score up 50-100 points, it could transform your candidacy. If your score was below average, you’re asking the Academy to bring down the mean just for you. Not a good strategy. Get into a prep course and take it 3 more times!

4. P – Plan your summer wisely. Many resume-building activities happen over the summer. Don’t waste the opportunity – plan out every week of your summer so it is propelling you toward your goals!

5. P – Peruse your medical records. Many folks re-apply because were medically disqualified. Peruse means to read carefully. Study your medical records to examine why you weren’t granted a waiver, then solidify gaps in records by seeing specialists with military backgrounds who will clarify your medical situation.

6. L – Listen to trusted guidance. Guys, don’t repeat the same mistakes. Get a better gameplan this time…get help!

7. Y – Your Why. Remember your why. This will push you when it gets tough. All Academy applicants hit a breaking point – what will keep you going? Remember your why!
