ACADEMY ADMISSIONS: BOYS/GIRLS STATE

Academy admissions highly value getting selected for Boys/Girls State. So much so, that we believe there is not a single thing you can do that would score more points for your Academy application than Boys/Girls State. We call it a “hack” because there are many activities (i.e. Eagle Scout/Gold Award) that take years of effort to obtain, but with this one, you can score likely the equivalent amount of points with only one week’s worth of investment.

What is it? It is one-week program put on by American Legion in every state in the US. The program champions democratic process, running mock elections and encouraging teamwork. Think of it as similar to MUN, but for your state. Most clients return exhausted from the long week. Boys/Girls State is in June or July of your rising HS senior summer.

How do I get admitted? It is sometimes a clunky process to get admitted as a delegate; it varies by state and even by region. Most commonly, you will be appointed by your HS guidance counselor. However, sometimes, it is the local American Legion offices (called “legionnaires”) that will interview you and select you.

ACTION STEP: Start researching now. Application deadlines are usually spring semester (Feb/Mar) of your Junior year.
