John McCain: Naval Academy grad, U.S. Senator, Presidential nominee, and Vietnam War POW.

The son and grandson of two 4-star Navy Admirals, John McCain graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958. Upon graduation, McCain became a Naval Aviator, and soon after, was deployed to Vietnam. While flying over Hanoi in his A-4E aircraft, he was shot down and captured as a prisoner of war. For 6 arduous years, he was tortured, interrogated, and given poor medical care. In March 1973, McCain and 108 prisoners were released, but the suffering left him severely disabled & permanently unable to lift his hands over his head. He received numerous awards, including the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, and Distinguished Flying Cross. McCain went on to serve in the United States Navy until his retirement in 1981.
