With many parts of the application, you aren’t given a choice. But with optional recommenders, it’s up to you. Who should you choose?

The “Why do you want to attend a Service Academy” question comes up each year, but so few applicants give good answers. Why is that?

Most Academy applications ask for 3 required recommenders (math, english, and science/other) and 2 optional recommenders.

The rule of thumb for letters of recommendation is this: identify recommenders based on relationship, not just position.

If 10 people apply to the Academies, 1 gets accepted, while the other 9 get denied. What’s the difference between the winning 1 and the other 9?
