ACADEMY ADMISSIONS: STUDENT COUNCIL

Some people minimize student council and say, “it’s just a popularity contest.” We can admit, there may be some truth to that. However, what characteristics do student council members usually exhibit? They are comfortable being out in front. They take on projects that help the school. They organize people in a specific direction. Sounds a bit like leadership, doesn’t it?

To a 50 year old Colonel who might be on the admissions board, compare two applicants: both have the same GPA, same SAT, same district, same # of varsity sports. However, one is President of the History Club, the other is Student Body President. Who will get the appointment?

It’s a good thought exercise. Think about this: One leads about 20 poeple, the other one leads 2,000 people. Which one has the better chance, all other things being equal, of being a more qualified leader?

This is why Student Council is so compelling to an admissions board. It shows a desire to serve your school, by being out in front and organizing large groups of people to accomplish a mission. By no means is it a requirement to getting into an Academy, but it can be a huge feather in your cap.

Perhaps you should run for Class President – why not you? Get after it!
